Surveys and Research Commissioned by TMGTokyo Metropolitan Research Institute for Environmental ProtectionThree roles of Tokyo Metropolitan Research Institute for Environmental ProtectionChassis dynamometer for large vehiclesAnalyzing PM2.5 and measuring equipmentTowards Improving and Enhancing Tokyo’s EnvironmentWith a view to providing scientific knowledge necessary for the implementation of Tokyo’s environmental policies and measures, the Institute conducts a wide range of surveys and research that contribute to the improvement and enhancement of the environment.A wide range of environmental researchEngages in a wide range of research activities that contribute to the improvement and enhancement of the environment, utilizing external funding from the government, the private sector, and other sources.Industry-academia-government collaborationPromotes collaboration with universities, other research institutions, and the private sector in conducting research. To support the implementation of environmental measuresProvides the scientic knowledge necessary for the implementation of Tokyo’s environmental policies and measures.1. Research on automobile-related environmental measureThe Institute is verifying the emission reduction effect of vehicles that comply with the latest regulations and low-emission vehicles; ascertaining the emission status of unregulated substances; and evaluating the reduction of CO2 emissions from hybrid vehicles.2. Research on sustainable resource useResearch is being conducted on the recycling of metals and incinerator ash from the municipal solid waste treatment process and on the treatment and management of harmful substances in exhaust gas from incinerators. Investigation is conducted on food waste situations and analysis is made on factors causing food waste.3. Research on reducing concentration of ne particulate matterThe Institute is measuring the concentration and analyzing the composition of ne particles in the air (PM2.5), estimating the source and elucidating the formation mechanism of PM2.5, and determining the actual state of nanoparticles with even smaller diameters.4. Research on measures to reduce high-concentration photochemical oxidantsThe Institute is conducting surveys on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are considered to be the causative agents of photochemical oxidants, and estimating their sources.5. Research on analytical methods of hazardous chemicals and clarication of residual chemicals in the environmentThe Institute is conducting research on persistent organic pollutants, which are highly toxic and do not readily degrade in the environment and therefore pose a risk to humans even in very small amounts. The research is focused on understanding the actual status of contamination and clarifying the sources of contamination.6. Research on conservation of the water environmentTo contribute to improving the environment of the metropolitan area’s water bodies, the Institute is conducting research on aquatic organisms in coastal areas, such as on the growth and habitat of aquatic organisms; verifying the effectiveness of environmental restoration techniques; and estimating the distribution and source of hygiene indicator bacteria. In addition, the Institute studies the actual condition of groundwater in Tokyo.12
